Faulty silicone implants also used for testicle and chest implants for men
A lot of news coverage has been given to the story about thousands of women who have had faulty breast implants which have become damaged.
As a result, many are desperate to have them removed, but are faced with paying thousands to do so. Problems arising from the implants include leaking, rupturing and, in isolated cases, women have developed serious illnesses.
Poly Implant Prothese (PIP), the French-based company responsible for the health scare had also supplied implants for testicles and chests for men using the same material. To make them, PIP used silicone intended for industrial use, which has been deemed illegal by French law courts.
The implants were made for foreign markets, and, like the breast implants, some have been sold in the UK. The exact number of implants that were fitted isn’t known, but it’s possible that hundreds, if not thousands of men have had implants made by PIP.
The testicular implants were made for men who had lost one or two as a result of a mastectomy, while the chest implants were created for sale to men who felt that they weren’t particularly ‘well built’. In addition to that, PIP also made buttock implants, which were also made with the same illegal silicone.
As is the case with the breast implants, the chest and testicular implants are potentially very dangerous. They could become damaged in an instant, which could have serious repercussions for their health. In some extreme cases, they have been linked to some forms of cancer. Removal is being put forward as the best option to deal with the implants, whether they have been damaged or not.
