PIP Breast Feeding Dangers
Thousands of women across the UK are living with the trials and tribulations of having faulty breast implants.
French company PIP (Poly Implant Prothese) supplied both the NHS and private health companies with thousands of implants which are susceptible to rupturing and leaking, and many women who had them fitted face the prospect of having to pay thousands to get them removed.
Women with the damaged PIP implants are struggling to cope with the consequences, and as well as possibly facing a huge medical bill, could be scarred for life. However, some of those who’ve had PIP implants which were seemingly working as normal found out to their horror that they can malfunction at any minute.
One such case involved a 39-year-old woman from the South East. A few years ago, while breastfeeding her daughter, one of her implants exploded. Not long after the incident, her daughter was diagnosed with an incurable brain tumour. She then feared that the implant damage could be the cause of the tumour. Despite the fact that her implant ruptured, her doctor apparently believed that it was safe to breastfeed with it, but, even if it wasn’t the cause of her daughter’s cancer, it is extremely risky breastfeeding with PIP implants.
Upon hearing of horror stories involving other women with the PIP implants who’ve experienced problems with breastfeeding, a 29-year-old woman from the North West has tried to get her implants removed, but is facing a hefty bill. Unsure of whether her implants were made by PIP, once she was informed that they were, she was told that she had to pay upwards of £3,000 for the operation.
While breastfeeding her daughter, she felt that she needed implants, but, when finding out that they were made by the French company, she feared that they could endanger the health of her daughter, or even her own. While her local clinic was offering free replacement implants, removal seemed like the best option available, but the possibility of having to fork out thousands for an operation that she doesn’t have has left her in limbo.
Regardless of whether they’re damaged or not, it’s probably safer not to breast your child if you have PIP breast implants. You never know what could happen. There is a possibility that they could become damaged at any moment, whether it’s leaking or rupturing. Before you consider breastfeeding your child, it might be worth your while to remove the implants to ensure that you avoid a scenario where they become damaged while feeding.
