The NHS needs over 6,000 blood donors each day to treat patients across England.

Blood transfusions are necessary when someone loses a lot of blood. It could be through an accident, during surgery or childbirth.

They are also used to treat blood disorders like sickle cell anaemia and haemophilia.

What is blood transfusion negligence?

Blood transfusion medical negligence can occur if the patient is:

  • Given the wrong blood type
  • Inadequately monitored during transfusion
  • Given contaminated blood

If a patient is given the wrong blood type, the body can attack the red blood cells which release a chemical that can cause kidney damage – this is known as Acute Haemolytic Transfusion Reaction (AHTR).
