Calls for a U-turn from private clinics in the breast implant scandal
Pressure is mounting on the private clinics that refuse to remove faulty breast implants to have a rethink.
The breast implant scandal, which could lead to personal injury claims being lodged if medical negligence occurs, continues to dominate the headlines in the UK as thousands of women anxiously await the latest developments.
As many as the 50,000 women in the UK are reported to have PIP implants and while the NHS has offered to remove the banned implants fitted by the NHS for free, some private clinics are refusing to do likewise.
The controversial stance prompted around 60 women affected by the issue to organise a protest on Facebook that took place on London's Harley Street on Saturday.
One of the protestors told of her shock at finding out about the faulty breast implants to The Sun newspaper: "I was in tears for about three days. I hadn't slept.
"I'm feeling a lot better now that I know we can fight back after meeting these amazing ladies."
Health secretary Andrew Lansley has been damning in his criticism of the private firms that refuse to replicate the stance of the NHS.
He said: “We believe that private healthcare providers have a moral duty to offer the same service to their patients that we will offer to NHS patients - free information, consultations, scans, and removal if necessary."
The Government placed adverts in a number of newspapers last weekend in an attempt to play down the health fears associated with the implants.
The advice read: "The latest advice from the NHS and plastic surgery experts is that women with PiP breast implants do not need to have them removed unless they have symptoms such as pain and tenderness.
"There is no link to cancer and there is no clear evidence of an increased risk of harm compared to other brands of breast implants."
