August is National Road Victim Month

National Road Victim Month was set up by the charity RoadPeace. It’s a campaign that aims to raise awareness of road safety, as well as acknowledge and remember those whose lives have been lost or affected by road traffic accidents.
How many people are involved in road traffic accidents?
The Department for Transport (DfT) estimates that 1,633 people were killed in road collisions in 2024 – an increase of 1% compared to 2023. There are thought to have been 128,375 casualties in total on our roads last year.
According to the DfT’s latest provisional statistics, car occupants were the most affected by fatal road accidents. They accounted for 43% of road deaths recorded last year. Pedestrians were the second most affected road users, making up 25% of fatalities recorded.
In 2024, fatal accidents involving motorcyclists increased by 9%. This was the largest increase in fatalities across all road user groups. They made up 21% of all fatal road accidents recorded in 2024.
Why is National Road Victim Month so important?
We spoke to our head of legal services Jacqueline Busby about the importance of National Road Victim Month:
“We see first-hand the impact a road traffic accident can have on both the people affected and their loved ones.
“Initiatives like National Road Victim Month are so important as they not only provide a time for reflection, but also raise awareness of the need for improved safety on our roads.
“The campaign highlights the support available for people who have been involved in road traffic accidents, too. And this is often invaluable after going through something so traumatic.”
If you’ve been involved in a road traffic accident, we could help you get the justice you deserve.
