Are You Choosing the Right Job?

In 2021, employment is a huge concern for a lot of people.

The economy has shrunk significantly since the coronavirus pandemic struck and unemployment has risen to highs not seen in many years.

This makes it vital for anyone in the position of finding a new job to carefully consider their options and whether they’re choosing the right one.

Although salary and benefits will be major factors influencing your decision, there’s a lot more to think about.

Here’s our guide to working out whether an opportunity will be right for you.

Compare multiple offers

If you’re in the fortunate position of having multiple job offers to decide between, make sure you compare them directly. Draw up a pros and cons list or even think about using a spreadsheet – if you’re data-inclined.

Compare all the vital figures – like salary, commuting time and holiday allowance – as well as the elements you can’t put a number on – like company reputation, your potential manager and your overall impressions.

Search out legal disputes

Look into the company’s history. Has it been involved in any legal disputes with employees? If they’ve had issues in the past, it’s a sign that it could happen again.

You don’t want to find yourself with an employment law problem so it’s something you should take into consideration before weighing up a new role.

Predict company growth

Projecting a company’s growth will help you work out whether there’ll be the opportunity to grow your skills and career or whether you’ll be looking for a new role soon after joining.

Is the businesses on an upward trajectory? Is it set to grow or are there signs that it’s not doing too well? Look at share price, company news and industry press. Have there been more hirings than firings – or is it the other way around?

Examine company culture

The work you do is important to your job satisfaction, but so is the environment you do it in. Identify what elements of company culture are important to you and whether a business can offer them.

If you’re comfortable with the company culture, you’re more likely to be happy at work. And if you’re happy, you’re going to be more productive, according to University of Oxford research. That makes everyone a winner.

Explore business values

What does the company think is important? For a good match, try to find an employer that shares your values – whether that’s a focus on teamwork, a desire to do good in the world or a particular love of innovation.

The closer your values align with your employer’s, the more likely it is you’ll stick around.

Trust your instincts

It’s more difficult if you’re interviewed via Zoom to pick up on potential red flags – like the hiring manager constantly checking their phone during the interview or if your prospective colleagues look like they’re afraid to speak.

But if you get a sense that the job or the manager or the company isn’t right for you, don’t ignore it. You know what’s best for you and if something doesn’t seem right, even the pros likely won’t make it any better when you’re actually working there.

Looking for a job isn’t easy. And if you’re looking because of an employment law issue like an unfair dismissal or wrongful redundancy, you might be putting more pressure on yourself, which can make it an even more stressful time than it would otherwise be.
